Emergency According to Sakunts

“What emergency has happened in the RA that prompts a 24/7 police patrol?” wonders Artur Sakunts, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor. He assures that the police conduct a 24/7 patrol, especially in Lori Region, however they are not traffic police but other police officers. There are only a few vehicles operating fromVanadzor today, however they get stopped on the way to Yerevan and documents of passengers are getting checked. In response to why they are checking the documents, the police officers state that the number of crimes has increased and they are trying to prevent them from happening. “There was nothing like this before the 24/7 seated demonstration and rally of the opposition which began on September 30th, although there was an increase in the number of crimes before that as well,” statedArtur Sakunts. The human rights activist has information that police agentsvisit Freedom Square, take footage of the participants of the demonstration and report their information to the police departments. “This is an abuse of the position of the police and a speculation of political goals, which leads to obstruction of the citizens’ right to free movement guaranteed by the Constitution,” noted the human rights activist. Referring to the recent cessation of the activity of the companies providing intercity passenger transportation, Artur Sakunts concluded that by a strange coincidence the companies providing passenger transportation cease their work on days that rallies are held.
