RA Social-Economic and Political Situation was Discussed

Human Rights Protection     Public Discussions     Press releases     /2011-September-19/

“In 2008, 1 milliard 600 million AMD was invested in the Republic of Armenia, 90% out was which was invested from Russian Federation, this number was twice reduced in 2009 as a result of financial crisis, the monetary investment in 2010 was 1 milliard 200 million AMD, while, 35% increase was recorded in 2011.

It appears that we do not create anything as a country, but only receive money from our relatives residing abroad”, ANC activist, economist Vahagn Khachatryan expressed this opinion during a training-discussion held at Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor. The discussion was devoted to RA social-economic and political situation, representatives from political parties and NGOs were invited to participate.

According to the study, presented by ANC activist Vahagn Khachatryan, there are villages in Armenia, where no classrooms are formed at schools, but in the majority of cases, several schools are integrated into one to be able to form at least one classroom. He considers the poverty issue as very serious, although pursuant to the official statistics, the poverty index in RA is 32%, nevertheless, by Mr. Khachatryan’s words; this number is actually even higher. As a solution, the economist recommends simplification of taxation field, provision of loans to villagers with low interest rates and creation of job opportunities for the citizens.

As to the discussions, it has been five years since the “School of Democracy” project was implemented by Helsinki Committee of Armenia. The Committee is based in Yerevan and it often organizes meetings both in Yerevan and in other regions of the country.
