HCA-Vanadzor Statement

On August 11, 2011, “We Won’t Keep Silent” Youth Initiative disseminated a statement, by which it claimed that the RA NSS should file a criminal case against Georgi Vanyan, President of the NGO “Caucasus Center for Peacemaking Initiatives because of the opinions and dispositions expressed by him during an interview with Azerbaijani mass media.

We claim that every citizen, every individual, regardless of country borders, has a right to express his/her opinion over any viewpoint or fact, as done by G. Vanyan.

We believe that the assertion of the“We Won’t Keep Silent” Youth Initiative is inherent in a totalitarian system of society, long forgotten but still showing activism. It is targeted against pluralism, one of the fundamental principles of a democratic society. We are also convinced that the“We Won’t Keep Silent” Youth Initiative has a right to express its opinion and it should not be prosecuted for violating democratic values.

At the same time, we believe that the RA authorities will use discretion and respect the viewpoint of one of the civil society representatives in Armenia, who also has the right to express an opinion.
