“Training and networking for young human rights activists” Project

“Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor” is implementing a project called “Training and networking for young human rights activists” from March 1, 2010. The project is funded by The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) private, nonprofit foundation only for the period March-August, 2010.


The goal of the project is to increase the role of youth in the human rights movement in South Caucasus. To reach the goal of the project the organization aims:

 

1.  To form joint mechanisms and tools of human rights protection for youth from South Caucasus.
2. To form a regional supervising body for human rights protection, and this will consist of 36 young representatives of South Caucasus /Armenia - 8 people, Georgia - 8people, Azerbaijan - 8 people, Nagorno Karabakh - 4 people, South Ossetia - 4 people, Abkhazia - 4 people/. 

 

The duration of the project is 3 years during which the following activities are planned:

 

1. To form human rights monitoring group consisting of 36 young people from South Caucasus in June, 2010.
2. To organize a training on “Human rights monitoring in the police-citizen relations” on 1- 7 August, 2010.
3. To implement a five-month human rights joint monitoring (August-December, 2010) of the police-citizen relations in South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno Karabakh).
4. To organize a training on “Summarizing monitoring results and making a regional alternative report on human rights situation in South Caucasus” in the  5th  month of the 2nd  year (2011).
5.   To organize a training on “How to conduct lobbying and advocacy” in the 7th month of the 2nd year (2011).
6. To publish Alternative report on human rights in South Caucasus related police – citizens relations in the 7th month of the 2nd year of the project.
7. To develop a Recommendation package on legislative changes.
8. To lobby the Recommendation package in the six countries of South Caucasus starting from the 8th month of the 2nd year of the project.
9. To organize a conference in Armenia for the presentation of human rights situation in the 6th month of the 3rd year.
10.  To make up a further activity plan (project proposal) of regional monitoring group.

In the framework of the “Training and networking for young human rights activists”  project HCA – Vanadzor is organizing a training on “Human rights monitoring in the police-citizen relations” in 1-7  August, 2010. The participants will gain knowledge and necessary skills  in human rights monitoring, will work out  a monitoring plan with the help of the experts from Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights  (Warsaw, Poland).They will participate in the development of the tools of  human rights monitoring, as well as they will work out the implementation plan of the monitoring.
After gaining relevant capabilities, each of the participants will apply them in their place of residence while monitoring the police-citizen relations for 5 months.

 

All expenses, including transportation for attending the training, local transportation during the monitoring, accommodation and monitoring fees will be covered by the organizers.  

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE PARTICIPATION:

 

o Participants from the mentioned countries: Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as from Nagorno Karabakh, Southern Ossetia, and Abkhazia; 
o Age – up to 30;
o Willingness to get involved in human rights activities, particularly related to the police-citizen relations;
o Experience in human rights sphere is a plus;
o Involvement in activities of  non-governmental organizations is a plus;
o Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills;
o  Ability to demonstrate creativity, problem solving and analytic set of mind;
o Ability to work independently as well as in a team;
o Excellent knowledge of Russian and/or English;
o Willingness to participate in all the stages of the project.
