Human Rights Protection Public Discussions

On May 19 and 20, 2009 public discussions and TV life broadcasts on “RA Legislation Regulating Family Relationship” took place in Tashir and Alaverdi towns of Lori region that was organized by Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor. Edmon Marukyan, the member of RA Chamber of Advocates and Arayik Zalyan, the lawyer of HCA Vanadzor were the experts of the public discussions and TV broadcasts. During the events the experts have presented the general provisions of the national legislation regulating family right, the procedure and conditions of registry and cessation of marriage, the rights and obligations of spouses, as well as the rights and obligations of parents and children, alimony obligations. During the public discussions and TV broadcasts the citizens had the opportunity to raise issues they were interested in and get thorough legal consultation. 37 questions have been addressed to the experts during the public discussion and 20 during the TV broadcast. The issues raised by the citizens were mainly related to: • divorce • alimony payment • deprivation and restoration of parental rights • division of common property of spouses • recognition of the fact of paternity • the procedure of child adoption, the rights of parentless children and etc. The experts provided the citizens with thorough responses. Such public discussions and TV programs will be continued. There are planned 3 discussions planned on various rights in each of 4 towns of Lori region. The topics of public discussions and TV broadcasts are based on the interests of the citizens. It should be mentioned that these events are held within the framework of the project “Capacity Building of HCA Vanadzor in the Sphere of Human Rights” implemented by HCA Vanadzor. The project is co-founded by the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Armenia and the Government of the Netherlands.
