Drug Users will Get Further Legal Aid

Human Rights Protection     Drug users     /2008-May-14/

On April 25, 2008 a round table took place in Yerevan where the problems of drug users were discussed. It was organized within the framework of the project “Legal Aid to Drug Users in Vanadzor” implemented by HCA Vanadzor.

The project aimed to study the problems of drug users’ families, to raise public awareness and provide legal aid.
During the discussions the employees of HCA Vanadzor presented other NGOs dealing with the problems of drug users with the project results.
The project resulted in revealing the problems of 53 drug users and 44 family members in the spheres of healthcare, occupation and in relations with law enforcement bodies. All these issues were regularly aired by local “Lori” TV station in Vanadzor.
During the project the drug users were provided with free of charge juridical consultation, monitoring of lawsuits was conducted. A guidebook was developed with the aim of providing drug users with legal aid. It covers all the information a drug user needs when he/she is called to a law enforcement structure as a witness, suspend and accused.
During the round table the participants were introduced further actions to be held in the sphere of protecting drug users’ rights. They made suggestions for making protection of drug users’ rights more effective.
HCA Vanadzor is planning to continue this project.
The project “Legal Aid to Drug Users in Vanadzor” was implemented from October 1, 2007 –May 1, 2008 with support of Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation.
