Unknown people tore the posters of ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan

Human Rights Protection     Electoral Rights     Press releases     /2008-January-27/

On January 27, at night, unknown people tore the posters of ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan. They drew a swastika and wrote degrading expressions on them.

Before that in Vanadzor the posters of the candidate of the Republican Party, prime minister Serge Sargsyan, had been torn.

The pictures of the ex-president near the entrance of the Vanadzor central office of Levon Ter-Petrosyan and the picture above the entrance door of pre-election campaign office of Pan Armenian Movement on the opposite pavement were painted black and were torn.
Besides, the door of the office of “Aylentrank” (Alternative) initiative, which supports Levon Ter-Petrossyan, was painted black and they drew fascist signs and wrote degrading expressions. They called the candidate “Blind dog” and “Blind scoundrel.”

Ashot Manukyan, the head of Pan Armenian Movement in Vanadzor, head of Vanadzor central office of Levon Ter-Petrossyan, says it happened after 1 a.m, as the party members were in the office before that. Ashot Manukyan suspects the team of Serge Sargsyan as he is the main contestant of Levon Ter-Petrossyan.
Whereas, the posters of Serge Sargsyan were entitled to the same hooligan attitudes in Vanadzor. The pictures of the prime minister, posted on a few buildings of the central street, were torn in the same way and fascist signs were drawn instead.
For the spoilt posters the Vanadzor office of Serge Sargsyan does not blame the supporters of Levon Ter-Petrossyan. Samvel Khalatyan, organizer from Lori regional organization of the Armenian Republican Party, considers the authors of such behaviour hooligans. He thinks that young people supporting this or that candidate do such things, but no one in the team of a candidate is aware about their actions. Khalatyan says that Aram Kocharyan, the head of Lori regional office of the Armenian Republican Party, gathered young members of the party and warned them to keep away from such phenomena.
”It is very possible that the teams of the candidates perform such actions against themselves in order to slander their opponent”-says Samvel Khalatyan
The supporters of Levon Ter-Petrossyan applied to the Vanadzor Police Department on this case.
