After the camp that took place in Gugark camp, Vanadzor, Armenia, we received a letter from an Armenian woman, blaming us for bringing together Azeri and Armenian youth and for renovating of Azeri graveyards in the village of Nor Khachakap (Saral). We translated the letter into Russian and English and sent it to the participants of the camp. We recently received a reply to this letter from one of the participants of the camp, an Armenian from Karabakh. We also translated it from Russian into Armenian and English. Regards, Arthur Sakunts Response letter by camp participant: Good morning Mr. Sakunts, I received your letter with comments on the camp. I want to answer the message sent by our compatriot. And this letter, so to say, is my response to this person. I want to tell you that it was a restoration of not a TURKISH, but an AZERBAIJANI graveyard!!! I want to consider your letter from the legal and moral points of view. You, I think, have decided to take advantage of such a principle, as freedom of speech. You could allow yourself to name our Azerbaijani friends "swine and vermin". But you have overlooked that in Armenia there is a Constitution, Criminal code which contain articles concerning protection of honour and dignity of the person and the citizen... For example, in article 14 of RA Constitution it is said: "Dignity of the person as an irrefutable basis of his rights and freedoms is respected and is under protection of the state". And in article 136 of the Criminal code criminal responsibility is foreseen for the humiliation of honour and dignity of the person and the citizen.... And besides the laws of Armenia, there are still international documents concerning protection of human honour and dignity.... What do we have in this case??? You offend people; moreover you cannot legally justify it. You ROUGHLY break the laws of your country though you consider yourself a respectable citizen, and probably a patriot of your country. In your statement ethnic, national hatred towards Azeri is expressed which contradicts the laws of the Republic of Armenia!!! It is a rough infringement, and can even serve as a reason for the rift to widen between the two nations. In your letter disrespect is expressed not only for Azerbaijani people, but also for your own people. Now we shall consider this situation on another level. The Azerbaijani cemetery was restored; the meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian youth was organized. It was organized by Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly - Vanadzor. But you see something negative in it, calling the Azeri swine and vermin because they destroy our monuments. Following your logic, we shall take as an example the same Azerbaijani cemetery which has been destroyed by ARMENIANS!!! This implies that ARMENIANS are also swine and vermin because they have destroyed the AZERBAIJANI cemetery. As I have understood, you are Armenian, and you name yourself a swine and a vermin... It’s interesting!!! One more point I shall note: the camp was called "A Camp of mutual trust" and the purpose was dialogue between youth of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Karabakh. When we went there, we couldn’t imagine that it would be very difficult to part with each other, that there would be tears, tears of regret that people do not understand, that HATRED and ANGER in anything can not bring anything good!!! And we, the youth, want PEACE, TRUST and UNDERSTANDING!!! We, the Karabakh youth, had been waiting for this meeting, and the guys from Azerbaijan came to communicate with us when many people just ignored us!!! You even cannot imagine what friendly and warm atmosphere reigned in the camp. We communicated for only 5 days, but these 5 days were worth many such years!!! In the eyes of the young participants, both from Armenia and Azerbaijan, there was no anger or hatred towards each another!!! There was a girl with us whose father died during the war, but she did not protest against Azerbaijani, did not fight, she behaved as a real Armenian, as a true patriot of her fatherland!!! You may speak, write anything you like....HCA did, is doing and is trying to do so much for us, for you, for the country...I have one question for you: What are you doing for your country??? Can you even do a part of what HCA did??? If you cannot realize the essence of an issue, do not understand what is going on, why do you write something like that??? Wouldn’t it be better to ask humanely??? Why do you offend people???? Who allows you to offend??? I remembered two sayings, the first one says: «Before speaking, you’d better think", and the second one " It is better if you cleverly keep silent, than stupidly speak!!!" Think of it!!! I hope that having read it, you’ll think and will come to the correct conclusions... And I hope a lot, that you’ll be brave enough to apologize to our Azerbaijani friends and to us...
